I’ve been to Lake Kirkpatrick, just a short drive out of Queenstown, many times over the years. But on this occasion it had a different feel to it. I used a filter to slow the exposure and let the dawn clouds stretch across the sky, and the lake was so still that it created a near perfect reflection. With the clouds drifting overhead and the water barely moving, this felt like a special scene to be capturing.

On this particular morning I had planned to spend the dawn in the Lindis Pass and arrived there extremely early and in total darkness to wait things out. However the perspective I had in mind required a certain amount of snowfall and so far this season there had not been a lot. So I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to move on without a clear destination in mind. As dawn was approaching I decided to head to Lake Ohau and what followed was simply awesome. The day revealed itself to be an absolutely clear and crisp morning with stunning mid-winter light falling over the mountains all around. Near Lake Ohau I found a number of scenes that allowed me to capture a perspective of the landscape that I like a lot. I spent several hours photographing in the area and captured some amazing shots. It was all a good reminder to listen to your instinct as I doubt my morning back at the Lindis Pass would have been as successful on this occasion.

Location: Taranaki, New Zealand

Getting to this location requires making a 2.5 hr trek up to Pouakai Hut, from which it is just a short distance further to the mountain tarns and an absolutely breathtaking view of Mount Taranaki. I spent several hours here shooting different perspectives in the changing light. The weather closes in and changes rapidly up there but I was very fortunate with the conditions and love the dramatic clouds in this image.

Location: Fiordland, New Zealand

Rain falls in Fiordland more than two hundred days a year making it just one of the unknown quantities visitors have to factor in when planning their trip. One of the upsides to so much rainfall is the creation of so many waterfalls from the sheer mountainsides which surround the lower Hollyford valley. On one particularly misty morning I was drawn to some of these waterfalls and the jurassic-like scene that was created with the lush Beech forest in the foreground. I set about capturing this scene quite quickly as the mist rolls in and out quickly and within a few minutes the scene was quite different.

Location: Milford Sound, New Zealand

I am always completely blown away by the grandeur and phenomenal scenery of Fiordland and this visit was no exception. I arrived at Milford Sound in the middle of the afternoon to find it wasn’t actually torrential rain as this had been the forecast. Instead I was pleased with the heavy-set cloud and thought this could work to my advantage. I set out to start shooting in the early evening and captured several different angels. However at about nine thirty pm a slight break in the clouds allowed this shaft of brilliant light to illuminate the scene and I quickly set about capturing it. Within a few seconds this light show was gone and darkness fell. I was super thrilled with this image of such an icon.

Location: Catlins Forest, New Zealand

The Catlins is such a special area of New Zealand offering rugged coastline, sublime forest and some truly beautiful cascading waterfalls. I waited until a suitably overcast day and made my way early in the morning to McLean Falls. The conditions were perfect as I set about capturing the lower part of this stunning waterfall.

Location: State Highway 8, New Zealand

While driving along State Highway 8 between Twizel and Lake Tekapo I was memorised by the harrowing looking sky and cloud formations over the Ben Ohau range in the far distance. As I sped along I just caught sight of this delightful blue farmers hut and quickly pulled the car up. I was thrilled when through the stormy overhead conditions a little speck of sun shone through to illuminate the scene and allowing me to capture this slice of Kiwiana.

As soon as I came across this perspective of New Zealand’s highest mountain (Aoraki / Mt Cook) I set about capturing the photograph in the late afternoon light that was bathing the whole scene. It is such a beautiful part of New Zealand and I was thrilled to be able to capture a little of this beauty in this photograph.
