This photograph was taken in the middle of winter in Queenstown at the end of what had been a fantastic and successful photographic trip. It was a great lesson to always be looking for the next shot, as I thought since I was heading to the airport shortly that all my opportunities for new images were finished. Instead I saw this scene and completely loved what I saw with the low dominating cloud below the brilliant Remarkable mountain range. This of course looks like a black and white photo but is actually full colour, giving an idea of how moody the scene was.

BARK BAY

Location: Bark Bay, Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand
In January 2021 I spent multiple days in Abel Tasman National Park literally soaking up not only the beautiful sunny days but also the absolutely incredible scenery. We covered most of the park and spent quality time enjoying the experience along the way. There are many amazing coves and beaches in the park but one of my favorites was the stunning Bark Bay. I literally sat memorised watching the lowering tide create this sandbank and took some great detailed photographs of the patterns created in the sand etc. However there was also something about the grand vista in front of me that I was completely drawn too and was thrilled to capture this photograph of the entire scene.

QUIET MORNING

Location: Otago Peninsula, New Zealand
I was scouring the Otago Peninsula one afternoon simply enjoying discovering the inlets and bays from the internal road. Quite late in the afternoon I headed to the coastal road and came right upon this delightful boat shed. With the breeze being up and the evening light not quite being right I decided this would be where I would head back to the next morning. Bright and early the next morning the scene looked completely different with tranquil calm over the entire bay and for just a brief minute or so the sky lit up with these beautiful hues. I got to work very quickly capturing the scene and as quickly as it had lit up the dawn light was gone. An hour or so later a big storm came in which lasted several days causing floods throughout Otago – this shot was literally taken in the calm before the storm.

I had been waiting till a suitably foggy morning to capture this jetty which is reasonably close to my home. Waking to such a morning I quickly got my camera gear together and by about seven-thirty on a wintry morning I found myself knee deep in water under this jetty. This fog was so thick and the morning so calm and quiet that it was a very surreal scene. This was exactly the perspective I was after so once I was sure i had the shot captured I headed home for coffee. I knew this was a special image and was thrilled with the result.

ANAWHATA WONDER

Anawhata Beach is one of my favorite on the West Coast out close from where I live. It is quite rugged and has a sense of isolation which I love. This photograph was taken one evening when I was the only person remaining on the beach and the natural light-show turned on by mother nature was simply amazing. I love this photograph.

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS #2

I have visited and photographed Bridal Veil Falls on a number of occasions but always came away feeling that there was a better image to be taken of this magnificent waterfall. On this occasion I was staying at the small seaside town of Raglan, which is close by and headed to the falls fairly early the next morning. Upon arriving there I felt the possibility was better for a special image as the morning light was soft and diffused which would allow me the ability to shoot a very long exposure for maximum depth of field. I set about shooting a number of locations and compositions however it was this interesting perspective which I was most looking forward to seeing on film. I was very glad after this visit to finally have cracked the Bridal Veil Falls.

TE ANAU DUSK

Equipment: Fujifilm GFX100S 100 MP, Fujifilm 32 – 64 mm Lens
The Kepler Track offers some wildly amazing scenery from mountain passes through to stunning forest. Upon reaching the DOC hut on Mt Luxmore at the end of day one it was obvious we were somewhere special and I was excited to see what I could capture of the incredible scenery around me. Wanting to find something a little different I set off again and eventually found this scene of the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau looking across to the Murchison Mountains. As the sun lowered I started capturing some of the subtle shifts of light across the scene to the mountains beyond. However it was after the sun had dropped below the horizon that a final burst of colour briefly illuminated the clouds above and reflected throughout the scene. I walked back to the hut in near dark thrilled with the photograph I had just captured.

TE WHAITI NUI A TOI CANYON #2

In 2022 I finally made my first trip back to the Whirinaki Forest in 20 plus years and it was quite amazing. An absolutely stunning forest with a great variety of walking tracks. There are also some brilliant photography options including the surreal Te Whaiti-Nui a Toi Canyon which I photographed late in the afternoon as the light filtered through the trees above. It was a real thrill to finally get back to this canyon and re-photograph it from a fresh perspective.
