After an amazing day of trekking from Lake Mackenzie, Routeburn Falls Hut was a welcome site at the end of day two of the Routeburn Track. The falls themselves are huge and after setting up in the hut I headed out to look for possible perspectives to photograph of the amazing location. I really wanted to capture something unique so found a track that led me to the river bottom and the base of the falls. This is where I setup and started shooting this scene which was just so stunning and quintessential. After a day of amazing scenery it was very rewarding to find yet another special little scene of the Routeburn.

LAKE MACKENZIE

Edition Size: 150 Signed & Numbered Prints

Arriving at Lake Mackenzie DOC hut late on the first afternoon of walking the Routeburn Track I was pretty happy to see it and claim my bunk bed for the night to come. Then it was time to explore the surrounds and the most obvious thing I noticed was how very low the lake was. This made sense given what a very long and hot summer it has been with little seasonal rainfall. So I needed to find a perspective utilising what I hoped would be the lakes reflection later in the evening and again in the morning to capture the amazing mountainous surrounds. I found this spot by climbing around what is normally an island surrounded by the lake and decided it was perfect. Then I returned to this spot at both dusk and again at dawn and was extremely lucky both times to capture stunning reflections and beautiful light. It was such a stunning scene and special experience and one I will never forget.

Edition Size: 150 Signed & Numbered Prints
Location: Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand
Equipment: Fujifilm GFX100S 100 MP, Fujifilm 45 – 100 mm Lens

Some photographers have an issue with ‘side of the road shots’ but I find that a bit silly because if a shot stacks up then it stacks up, no matter where it is taken from. And such is the case with this scene which I have driven past hundreds of times on the way to my favorite beaches on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. On this trip however I decided to make the effort to get to this spot at dawn and was rewarded with a beautiful scene. While I was taking this shot another car pulled up and snapped a shot on their phone without actually getting out of the car. For me to get this shot took a little more time and long exposure to capture the amazing colour unfolding before me. I was very happy to finally capture this ‘side of the road’ scene.

Equipment: Fujifilm GFX100S 100 MP, Fujifilm 45 – 100 mm Lens

This is one of the most photographed scenes in New Zealand and a special place to visit. It is especially beautiful at sunrise before any breeze starts up allowing a perfect reflection across the lake of the Southern Alps. This was shot on a wonderful autumn morning where the right elements came together to capture this scene before rain set in later in the day.

PORORARI STILLNESS

Edition Size: 150 Signed & Numbered Prints
Location: West Coast South Island, New Zealand
Equipment: Fujifilm GFX100S 100 MP, Fujifilm 45 – 100 mm Lens

I have been aware for a long time of the wonderful limestone boulders and formations to be found in some of the rivers on the West Coast. After a fair amount of searching over a couple of days I came across this scene on the Pororari River and knew straight away I had found what I was looking for. It was a little bit of a challenge to get to this position with quite a climb down a steep slippery bank to land on a small spot with just enough space to set up my equipment. The effort paid off however with this part of the river being completely still allowing for the reflections not only of the limestone but also of the cliffs high above.

This simple composition of a small grouping of Nikau Palms caught my eye earlier in the day. However it was while I was heading past again just on sunset heading to another location that the awesome dusk light provided a striking silhouette made me quickly change plans. I will always be glad to have decided to turn around and head back to capture this image on what was a special dusk on the West Coast.

SOUTHERN SPLENDOUR

$430.00$1,895.00 Inc. GST

Edition Size: 100 Signed & Numbered Prints
Location: Mackenzie Basin, New Zealand

On the advice of a local I headed to a little known point at dawn to capture this photograph looking out across Lake Alexandrina. It is such a beautiful spot and because it is slightly off the beaten track I was the only one there and enjoyed an incredible light display from a stunning sunrise across the Southern Alps to a lovely crisp autumn morning. As I sat there taking this photograph I knew I was capturing a little slice of  quintessential South Island.

CATHEDRAL COVE

$430.00$1,895.00 Inc. GST

Edition Size: 150 Signed & Numbered Prints
Location: Cathedral Cove, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand
Date Taken: December 2020

Cathedral Cove is a must-do while visiting Coromandel Peninsula and if you can make it at dawn then all the better as the first rays of the sunrise hitting the cove are truly beautiful. I have been here many times over the years and it used to be that you could park at the top of the hill and make the twenty minute walk down to the cove. That must have been far to easy because now they have removed all parking and replaced it with a shuttle bus system – or the alternative is a one and a quarter hour walk from Hahei Beach. So at 4am I started my walk over the coastal track arriving just in time to take in what was a stunning sunrise. The one benefit of the extra walk is I had this stunning place entirely to myself which is something I will always remember.
