Over Easter 2024 we walked the Tongariro Northern Circuit which is a two night three day walk around the mountains of the Tongariro National park. It is such a brilliant walk and a real thrill to walk through such different and sometimes other-worldly landscape. The first night was spent at Waihohonu Hut which is set within an awesome landscape and offers unique vantage point of Mount Ngauruhoe. Waking early in the morning I set out to explore the surrounds and found this perspective of the mountain and foliage which immediately caught my attention. It was such a calm and beautiful sunrise and an awesome place to capture this special scene.

TE ANAU DUSK

Location: Kepler Track, Fiordland, New Zealand

The Kepler Track offers some wildly amazing scenery from mountain passes through to stunning forest. Upon reaching the DOC hut on Mt Luxmore at the end of day one it was obvious we were somewhere special and I was excited to see what I could capture of the incredible scenery around me. Wanting to find something a little different I set off again and eventually found this scene of the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau looking across to the Murchison Mountains. As the sun lowered I started capturing some of the subtle shifts of light across the scene to the mountains beyond. However it was after the sun had dropped below the horizon that a final burst of colour briefly illuminated the clouds above and reflected throughout the scene. I walked back to the hut in near dark thrilled with the photograph I had just captured.

MORNING CALM

I have been to this location a number of times over the last few years and it is always an incredibly serene experience. On this occasion in August 2022 I was excited to see in the pre-dawn light this interesting formation of clouds in the distance and reflecting in the stillness of the lake. I got going straight away as the light changes quickly and opted for a long exposure to give the slowly moving clouds movement and add depth and character. I was thrilled with the resulting image of a very special place.

Whirinaki Canyon

After more than 20 years since my last visit I finally made it back to the amazing Whirinaki Forest in August 2022. This ancient forest is really special as it was conserved from felling back in the 1970’s and 1980’s when a concerted conservation effort was made to preserve it. Today on arrival you are overwhelmed by the share size of the magnificent trees which tower over you as you wander through the beautiful lush forest. One of the highlights found within the forest is the surreal Te Whaiti-Nui a Toi Canyon. This photograph was captured while perched on the edge of the canyon with the beautiful afternoon light filtering through the trees above. Whirinaki offers so much and I certainly won’t be leaving it so long till the next visit.

ROUTEBURN FALLS

After an amazing day of trekking from Lake Mackenzie, Routeburn Falls Hut was a welcome site at the end of day two of the Routeburn Track. The falls themselves are huge and after setting up in the hut I headed out to look for possible perspectives to photograph of the amazing location. I really wanted to capture something unique so found a track that led me to the river bottom and the base of the falls. This is where I setup and started shooting this scene which was just so stunning and quintessential. After a day of amazing scenery it was very rewarding to find yet another special little scene of the Routeburn.

LAKE MACKENZIE

Arriving at Lake Mackenzie DOC hut late on the first afternoon of walking the Routeburn Track I was pretty happy to see it and claim my bunk bed for the night to come. Then it was time to explore the surrounds and the most obvious thing I noticed was how very low the lake was. This made sense given what a very long and hot summer it has been with little seasonal rainfall. So I needed to find a perspective utilising what I hoped would be the lakes reflection later in the evening and again in the morning to capture the amazing mountainous surrounds. I found this spot by climbing around what is normally an island surrounded by the lake and decided it was perfect. Then I returned to this spot at both dusk and again at dawn and was extremely lucky both times to capture stunning reflections and beautiful light. It was such a stunning scene and special experience and one I will never forget.

COROMANDEL HARBOUR

Some photographers have an issue with ‘side of the road shots’ but I find that a bit silly because if a shot stacks up then it stacks up, no matter where it is taken from. And such is the case with this scene which I have driven past hundreds of times on the way to my favorite beaches on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. On this trip however I decided to make the effort to get to this spot at dawn and was rewarded with a beautiful scene. While I was taking this shot another car pulled up and snapped a shot on their phone without actually getting out of the car. For me to get this shot took a little more time and long exposure to capture the amazing colour unfolding before me. I was very happy to finally capture this ‘side of the road’ scene.

LAKE MATHESON

This is one of the most photographed scenes in New Zealand and a special place to visit. It is especially beautiful at sunrise before any breeze starts up allowing a perfect reflection across the lake of the Southern Alps. This was shot on a wonderful autumn morning where the right elements came together to capture this scene before rain set in later in the day.
