Black & White Impressions from Europe

I’ve just returned from a few weeks travelling through Europe, spending time in Italy, Amsterdam and Paris. As always, it was a chance to photograph, but also just to look a bit more closely at places that are already heavily photographed.

One thread that emerged for me on this trip was a series of black and white images. Not traditional landscapes, but moments of light, structure and contrast that felt better without colour.

These weren’t planned as a series before I left. They were more a response to what was in front of me — early mornings, empty streets, and reflections in these wonderful older cities.

A few early frames below.

Damrak Canal Houses reflections black and white photography

Amsterdam — Damrak

A still morning with just enough movement in the water to break up the reflection. The buildings along Damrak are photographed constantly, but it was the distortion and abstraction in the canal that held my attention here.

Les Duex Margots cafe in Paris black and white photography

Paris — Les Deux Magots

Early morning again and the street is quiet. This is a well-known café in Paris and the chairs have just been set out for another day, but at that time of day there was a stillness to it.

Florence Duomo black and white photography

Florence — Duomo at Dawn

Taken just before sunrise with very few people around. The tower has an incredible amount of detail, and without colour the focus shifts more to the geometry and contrast in the stonework.

I’m still working through the full set of images from the trip, and will share more over the coming weeks as they come together.

A selection of prints will likely come from this series once I’ve had time to properly edit and review the work.
